"How can you even let this in?" - Israel is outraged by the arrival of "anti-fascism fighter" Domogarov on tour

The editor-in-chief of the Ukrainian print weekly Boulevard Gordon, journalist Yulia Pyatetskaya, on May 29th reacted in Facebook to the "scandalous statements" of Israeli producer Herman Khazanov, who organized the visit of Russian actor Alexander Domogarov to Israel for a performance.
"Israeli citizen Herman Khazanov, 'owner of an Israeli company, which faithfully pays taxes to Israeli tax authorities,' invited Domogarov's performance "Vertinsky" to Israel – a Russian drunkard, actively supporting the war and glorifying the bravery of Russian soldiers, their 'open, big, and noble heart.' While Domogarov is waiting for Russian soldiers to return victorious, Khazanov invited him to Haifa, Ashdod, and Tel Aviv, for which he was subjected to some ostracism on social media. After that, he immediately wrote a response," – described Pyatetskaya the situation.
Pyatetskaya pointed out that Khazanov called the criticism "free PR," claiming that "the choice of the artist was never based on political preferences." The producer also called the full-scale invasion of the aggressor country Russia into Ukraine "couch disputes."
"He explained that he is interested in the Gaza Strip, that 'the Russia/Ukraine history interests him no more than a news agenda,' and that 'everyone earns as they can.' And in general, 'if you replace Russia with Israel and Domogarov with an Israeli artist, would that cause you any rejection?' – Pyatetskaya quoted the producer of Domogarov.
She reminded Khazanov that actor, composer, poet, and singer Alexander Vertinsky was born in Kyiv, which has been bombed by Russian occupiers for the fourth year.
"Russian People's Artist, blessing these bombings, is playing in a performance about Vertinsky. An Israeli producer, for whom the war in Ukraine is 'couch disputes,' wants to profit from Vertinsky. Here, I will answer, – said Pyatetskaya. – I have offended many people in my life by my stubborn disbelief in the great power of culture. With some, I even quarreled. Especially recently. I truly don't believe that culture makes this world better. Or can make it better, in principle. About that world – I'm not sure yet. I don't believe, and I will never believe, in the saving and healing power of culture for humanity anymore."
According to the journalist, if culture saved the world, people would "have long lived in the kingdom of heaven," because "culture behind humanity – you can eat it with your ass."
"I believe that culture is needed and important not for everyone, that everyone understands its importance, meaning, and significance in their own way. I believe that you can be an idiot and a theatrical producer, a scoundrel and know Hamlet and "The Squirrel" by heart, a complete bastard and a talented poet, a...d, a prose writer. I believe you can kill and torture people, and then go to the theater in the evening, that you can’t distinguish good from evil and make money on theatrical tours. That you can support monstrous crimes, brutality, and sadism, but pay taxes regularly," – said Pyatetskaya. – "Also, I believe in the power of a...kicks."
She added that she "has read and listened to all kinds of filth and stupidity" about the Russian aggression against Ukraine.
"But the phrase 'couch disputes Russia/Ukraine' performed by an Israeli person in the theatrical culture will stay in my long cultural memory," – she emphasized.
Pyatetskaya also published a poem by Vertinsky, written in 1956, dedicated to Kyiv.
"Kyiv – my tender homeland,
It sounded to me in a dream,
My rebellious youth,
Finally, you returned to me!
I’m ready to kiss your streets,
To embrace your squares.
I’m already old, stooped,
I’ve lost count of the years.
And your deep chestnuts,
Spring’s panic,
They all bloom, as before, mighty,
They guard my childhood dreams.
I walk through my hometown,
Like through a graveyard of youthful days.
I remember every stone from my youth,
Every bush grew with me.
Here they sold ice cream,
And to the left was a bell tower...
Have mercy on me, Lord,
My candle is burning out!" – he wrote.
Domogarov is listed on the website "Peacemaker" for "conscious multiple" violations of the state border of Ukraine to penetrate the Crimea occupied by Russian invaders, participating in Russian propaganda events against Ukraine, and involvement in attempts to legitimize the occupation of Crimea by Russian invaders. The actor also conducted illegal activities in the occupied Crimea.
On May 28, Israeli writer Arthur Solomonov expressed his outrage on Facebook about the possible arrival of Russian actor Alexander Domogarov in Israel, who supported the full-scale invasion of the aggressor country Russia into Ukraine and the illegitimate Russian President Putin.
"To Israel with a tour comes 'a fighter against fascism' Alexander Domogarov," – wrote Solomonov.
In chronological order, he also reminded followers of the actor's statements supporting the war.
"March 2022: Domogarov speaks in support of Russia’s military actions against Ukraine, calling it a fight against fascism. He participates in a rally in support of the special military operation. He declares that he strongly disagrees with colleagues who criticize Russia abroad. Recently, he stated the uniqueness of the Russian soldier: "There are no soldiers in the world with 'such an open, big, and noble heart,'" – reminded the writer. – "He asked 'to return with victory': 'Believe me, you have something to defend. We feel immense gratitude to everyone who is currently on the front.' Domogarov also promised that the children of soldiers returning from the special operation would 'look at them with admiration.'
To prove his words, Solomonov shared a relevant video with Domogarov's participation.
"Shame on Israel. This is person Z. How can you let this in?" – reacted Russian journalist and blogger, former host of the "Echo of Moscow" radio station Ksenia Larina.
"What a monstrosity! A drunken scoundrel. But they really want to eat, just like all of them," – wrote in the comments.
"He should be met the way he deserves," – commented in the network.
"I sincerely hope that this obscenity will be canceled," – said followers.
Under the post, also marked the organizer of Domogarov’s tour in Israel, Herman Khazanov. He began threatening the post’s author with a lawsuit and defended Domogarov. On April 4, on his Facebook page, Khazanov called Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine "couch disputes".

"Arthur's brilliant post, starting as a warning about the inadmissibility of Domogarov's tour, eventually fully revealed the other 'person' – the 'businessman' Khazanov. Now decent people will understand whose concerts they shouldn't attend. And decent artists – with whom they shouldn't associate," – wrote in the comments.

We believe that the use of culture and the arts to promote violence and support for war is unacceptable.
It is important that society and the creative community understand their responsibility to humanity, especially in the context of ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine. Any attempts to justify actions that support the aggressor must be condemned.
