Yosif Zissels: Life and Activity

Early Years and Education
Yosif Zissels was born on December 2, 1946, in Tashkent, in a family evacuated from Chernivtsi during World War II. In 1952, he lost his mother, and since then his life has undergone numerous changes. In the early 1960s, his family moved from Chisinau to Chernivtsi, where he continued his education.
In 1969, Zissels graduated from the Faculty of Physics at Chernivtsi University, after which he served in the Soviet Navy. During this period, he became actively involved in human rights activities, joining the Jewish and democratic underground movements, which later played an important role in his life.
Political Activity and Repression
From the early 1970s, Yosif Zissels actively participated in underground movements for the rights of Jews in the USSR. In 1972, he was expelled from the Komsomol for supporting the right to repatriate Jews to Israel. In 1978, he joined the Ukrainian Helsinki Group — an organization that fought for human rights in the Soviet Union.
Due to his human rights activities, Zissels was arrested in 1978 and sentenced to three years in a strict regime colony for "spreading slander." This arrest was just part of the repressions against him, but despite this, he continued his struggle for the rights of Jews and freedom of speech.
Dissident and Human Rights Activist
Yosif Zissels became one of the central figures in the Jewish movement in the USSR. He was one of the founders of the first Jewish organization in Chernivtsi in 1988 and an active participant in the creation of Vaad (Confederation of Jewish Organizations and Communities of the USSR) in 1989, where he became one of its leaders. This movement played an important role in restoring the rights of Jews in post-Soviet Ukraine and creating conditions for their return to Israel.
In 1987, Zissels refused amnesty offered by the Soviet authorities because it required signing an agreement to renounce political activity. His refusal and resilience made him a symbol of the struggle for freedom in the USSR.

War and Identity?

The main topic of the discussion will be war and identity, which is closely related to the current situation in Ukraine and the challenges that the people face during wartime. Zissels will emphasize the importance of preserving national identity during the war and the importance of support from the international community, including Israel.
The meeting with Yosif Zissels will not only be an informative event but also an important step in strengthening mutual understanding and support between the two nations.
